Improve your property in 6 simple ways

Whether you’re getting your property ready to sell, or just giving it a facelift, improving the look and functionality of your home is easy. Here are six of our favourite fixes to get you started.

1. Install a shiny new front door

Whether it is old, new, modern, or vintage, your front door is one of the most striking features of your home’s exterior. In fact, it’s often the first thing that visitors to your home will notice when they arrive at your property. Replacing your old, tired front door with a new, contemporary design is a great way to boost curb appeal and give your home the introduction it deserves.

When selecting a new door for your property, think about the style of your home and the look of the other houses on your street. If you live in a period property, a Victorian style door may be your best option. If your home is a little more modern, however, a contemporary door will suit it perfectly.

2. Repair or replace your gutters

If your gutters are overflowing, filled with moss and leaves, or twisted and broken, giving them a bit of TLC will make a big difference to the look and functionality of your property. A lot of the time, gutters just need to be cleared and painted in order to get them working well and looking great. However, if your gutters have been neglected for a long time, you may well find the entire system needs to be replaced.

3. Swap curtains for shutters

Old, tired curtains won’t be doing anything to improve your home’s curb appeal. If you want to give both the interior and the exterior of your property a boost, take down your dated curtains and replace them with stylish new shutters. If your interior is a little on the dark side, opt for light coloured shutters to help reflect the light and brighten up the space.

4. Boost curb appeal with some greenery

Having a few trees or shrubs outside your property can have a huge impact on its appearance. What’s more, adding some greenery can be great for your property’s value. As @AngiesList highlights, ‘Money magazine estimated that while kitchen or bathroom remodeling can bring a recovery value up to 125 percent, landscaping can bring up to a 200-percent return at selling time.’

5. Give your windows some TLC

Like your front door, your windows have an instant and profound impact on curb appeal. Replacing old, broken or dated windows with energy efficient new panes will not only make your home more attractive, it will also help you to cut down the amount you spend heating your property.

6. Clean up your front garden

If your front garden is full of scrappy plants, weeds and discarded toys, now’s the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and give it a clean. Giving your front garden a facelift will instantly make your home more attractive and boost its curb appeal.
