4 ways to save money on window dressings

Every now and again it’s nice to switch up your home décor. Changing things like curtains and blinds can really refresh the feel of a room. However, these kinds of updates can be expensive. If you want to make a few changes throughout the year, the pennies can quickly add up. Luckily, there are ways to refresh your window dressings without breaking the bank. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Check out a tutorial

If you’re a dab hand with a sewing machine, why not try making your own curtains or blinds? There are so many different styles for choose from. Maybe you like the chic look of Roman blinds, or perhaps you prefer traditional drapes? Whatever your style, take a look online and see if you can find a tutorial. If sewing isn’t your forte, just search for ‘no sew’ options.

Blogger Erica Chan Coffman advocates making your own Roman curtains. However she states that the initial fear of making DIY curtains is actually worse than the actions involved. She writes:

“One of the most forbidding tasks I’ve come across after renovating our home has been finding proper window coverings. From the tedious task of picking out fabric from a collection of subpar choices to the daunting cost of a custom order, it’s no wonder countless windows have remained bare and uncovered for nearly a year since we moved in.”

The great thing about making your own curtains or blinds is that they will be completely unique. You’ll also get a great sense of accomplishment, which you can enjoy every time you look out of the window.

Try upcycling

If you’re unsure about making a full set of curtains from scratch, upcycling might be a good option for you. ‘Upcycling’ basically means taking a second-hand item and enhancing it. When it comes to upcycling curtains or blinds, the possibilities are endless. You could take a simple, plain blind and paint a colourful pattern onto it.

Another option would be to attach a decorative trim or some beading to the edge of a set of curtains. Look around some second-hand shops to see what they have in stock. Once you’ve seen the different ‘canvases’ you have to work with, get creative and sketch out a few ideas. Then choose your favourite and get to work.

Go bargain hunting

When you’re looking to refresh your home in a hurry, you may not have time to create something yourself. If that’s the case, there are plenty of ways to purchase window dressings at a reduced price. These days, many high street shops have ‘sale’ sections throughout the year. There are some great reductions to be found on new curtains and blinds, so take the time to shop around.

Another option is to buy second-hand. You could start by checking out your local charity shops. You could also look out for jumble sales and car boot sales in your area. These are all great places for finding a bargain.

Look online

If you’re keen to buy your window dressings new, it’s a good idea to do some research first. Begin by deciding what you’re looking for, in terms of size, material, and appearance. Then, decide on your budget. Once you know what you’re looking for, start looking at different retail websites. Don’t be swayed into buying the first nice curtains or blind that you see. Take your time and compare different shops and prices with one another. You may even find that some high street shops have exclusive ‘online only’ offers.

Once you’ve found your perfect window dressings, look at the options for delivery. Some shops will let you order online and collect your purchase in-store, for free.
