4 Unusual uses for curtain rails and hooks

There may come a time when you want to update your curtain rails. Maybe you’ll decide you’d like to try a new style or colour. Perhaps you’ll swap the curtains for blinds. Either way, you’ll need to do something with your old curtain rail and hooks. Before you throw them away, consider these inventive ideas for re-purposing them…

Storage baskets

Curtain rails don’t need to stay above the window. Narrower rails can be used as storage solutions throughout your home. Simply fix the rail to the wall and use your curtain hooks to hang small storage baskets from it. If your curtain rail is quite long, you may need to cut it down to size. Alternatively, you could use the curtain hooks and replace the rail with something smaller.

Once your baskets are hanging in place, you can use them to store all kinds of household items. This is a particularly good solution for tidying bathroom products or office supplies. You could even hang up a few baskets in your living room to store phone chargers or TV remotes. This will help to keep your space clutter-free.

Accessory organisation

If you have a set of old curtain rings, why not put them to use in your wardrobe? Simply attach the rings to the bottom of one or more triangular coat hangers. Then thread your belts or scarves through the hoops. This is a great way of keeping your accessories in good condition, rather than scrunched up in a drawer.

Another option is to fix a small curtain rail to your bedroom wall. You could then use ‘s-shaped’ curtain hooks to hang your bags or hats from the rail. If you’re using a smaller rail, you could even display jewellery, such as necklaces or bracelets.

Towels and coats

If you’re looking for a creative way to store your family’s coats, why not use a set of old curtain hooks? Hang a set of hooks from a horizontal rail beside your door. Then, when people visit the house, have them hang their coats up in a row.

As well as there being easier access, you can store more simply by sliding them along and adding more hooks. You can use the same system to store your towels in the bathroom. Just fix a rail to the wall and use the curtain hooks to hang the towels. The nice thing about the hooks is that you can slide them sideways, to keep your wet and dry towels separate.

Kitchen storage

Left unchecked, the kitchen can be one of the messiest rooms in the house. When you’re in the middle of preparing a meal, the last thing you need is to be surrounded by clutter. Using a rail and some curtain hooks, you can create extra storage on your walls and within cupboards. As always, make sure that the rail is the appropriate size and weight before attaching it to any surface. Once in place, you can use the hooks to hang cups, jugs, or even saucepans.
