Points to consider when choosing a front door

Your front door is an integral part of your home. The writer Sophie Keller from the Huffington Post has said that “the front door is the ‘mouth’ of your home”! When you are in the process of purchasing a front door, there are a few key things to consider.

Here are our guidelines to give you a few pointers:

1) Aesthetic. Your front door can say a great deal about your home in terms of style and character, and it creates a first impression to passers-by as well as visitors. A brilliant front door can completely transform the appearance of your house and is a pretty economic way of doing so. With this in mind, you can possibly afford to be a bit more experimental. Have a think about colour, pattern, style and material. It’s a good idea to choose the look of your door based on the style of your house – a contemporary looking door probably wouldn’t complement a period home, for example!

2) Budget. You need to be clear on what you can afford to spend on your front door so you can pick the appropriate materials. Whether you’re wanting to choose double or triple glazed doors will also impact the cost. Besides the immediate cost, you’ll also need to weigh up other pros and cons. For instance, wooden doors can look great but need more maintenance whereas fibreglass doors are more practical in terms of durability but might not be as stylish.

3) Reviews. Look at company or supplier reviews. You can purchase front doors from an array of places, including online. As with any products and/or services, it’s always wise to check out past reviews and feedback from other customers and see images of the company’s work. Seek out genuine customer reviews that mention how reliable a company is, how they were to deal with, the quality of their products and the end result. It you find a supplier that seems a great deal cheaper than anywhere else, this isn’t always a good sign so remember to do thorough research!

4) Security. Other than looking great, your front door also has to be secure! Different doors and doorframes have varying levels of security. For example, if you were to purchase a sturdy doorframe and a metal door, it’s going to be far more secure than a very pretty door with multiple glass windows (these types of doors are more prone to attract break-ins). Generally, you want to ensure that your front door has deadbolts and that the screws for the strike plate extend all the way into the studs, and not to just the door frame.
