Don’t underestimate the impact handles have on the look and feel of your windows

If you’re currently searching for new windows, you probably have an idea of the style, colour and materials you’re looking for. Like most people, you’re probably focusing on the overall look of the windows and working to ensure you get their aesthetic just right.

As well as the big things-  like the size of the panes, the style of the frame, and the design of the unit, there are a lot of other things that will have an impact on the look and feel of your windows. One of these is the handles. Available in a huge variety of shapes and sizes, handles can transform the look of your windows.

It’s all in the details

Often, it’s the small details that have the biggest impact on a home. Like The House Designers points out, “You can take your home’s exterior from ordinary to extraordinary by adding decorative trim, moulding, crossheads and shutters to your windows.” And handles are no different. Transforming the look of your windows and improving their usability, handles will influence both the interior and the exterior design of your property.

How to select your handles

The type of handles you choose will depend on the look you want to achieve. Go for sleek, contemporary handles if you want your home to have a modern aesthetic, opt for a traditional design if you want to emphasise your property’s traditional features, or go for something quirky and original, if you want your home to stand out from the crowd.

Most of the time, people choose handles in a material that matches their window frame and interior design, however there are no set rules. If you aren’t going to try and match your handles to your window frames, opt for handles in a metallic finish as this shouldn’t clash with your interior design. When selecting your handles it’s also a good idea to think about how you’re going to use your windows. Do you want to open and close them quickly and easily? Do they need to be child proof? Or do you want fittings that enable you to open your windows in multiple directions.

Security

As well as aesthetic considerations, there are also security issues to think about when choosing handles for your windows. It’s important that the accessories you choose are strong, easy to lock and difficult to break. If they’re too fiddly or awkward to reach, there’s a chance you may forget to lock your windows and could end up leaving your home vulnerable.
